Wuring Fishing Village: Culture and Life Above the Sea

A few days ago, I accompanied a German couple on a visit to Wuring Fishing Village in Maumere, on the island of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This visit marked the beginning of our 10-day adventure exploring the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and local way of life of Flores.

As a local tour guide who has spent many years accompanying travelers across Flores, visiting Wuring was certainly not my first experience. Yet, there is something about this place that keeps me coming back. Every time I visit, I find another reason to admire the life of its people.

Flores is well known for its communities, many of whom depend on farming, plantations, and other land-based activities for their livelihoods. However, along the coast of Maumere, life takes on a different character. Here, I discovered a way of life that is closely connected to the sea.

Wuring Fishing Village shows us how people adapt to their environment and build a community where the ocean is not merely a place to catch fish, but an essential part of their culture, traditions, and everyday lives.

Getting to Know Wuring Fishing Village in Maumere

Wuring is one of the well-known fishing settlements in Maumere, the capital of Sikka Regency on Flores Island. The village is located along the northern coast of Maumere, in Wolomarang Urban Village, Alok Barat District, Sikka Regency.

It is only about 2 kilometers from Maumere city center and takes approximately 10 minutes to reach by car, depending on traffic conditions.

Besides being known as a traditional fishing settlement and a center for local fishing activities, Wuring is also associated with the trading of seafood and the area’s maritime activities.

For travelers who want to discover the coastal way of life in Flores, Wuring offers an experience quite different from visiting the island’s usual natural attractions.

The main attraction here is not grand architecture or modern tourist facilities. Instead, it is the everyday life of a community that lives on and around the sea.

The History and Culture of Wuring Fishing Village

One of the most interesting aspects of Wuring is its connection to the Bajo people, a maritime community widely known as skilled sailors throughout Indonesia.

The Bajo have a long tradition of navigating the waters of the Indonesian archipelago. The sea is central to their identity, serving both as a source of livelihood and as a place for social and cultural interaction.

The presence of Bajo communities along the coast of Flores is connected to centuries of inter-island sailing and fishing traditions. Some eventually settled in the area, raised families, and established communities that have been passed down through generations.

In Wuring, this maritime heritage remains visible in the daily lives of its residents. Fishing boats, freshly caught seafood, stilt houses, and fishing-related activities are all part of the village’s everyday scenery.

The majority of Wuring’s residents are Muslim. Their religious traditions contribute to the distinctive character of the community, where maritime heritage, Islamic values, and interactions with other communities in Flores come together.

For me, visiting a place like Wuring is about more than seeing a traditional settlement. It is also an opportunity to understand how migration, culture, and livelihoods have shaped the identity of a community.

A Floating Fishing Village That Never Fails to Amaze Me

This visit to Wuring felt a little different from my previous trips. It was the first time I had returned to the village since the earthquake that struck Flores on August 15, 2026.

After experiencing a disaster and working to recover, the people of Flores have continued striving to rebuild their lives. Seeing the people of Wuring going about their daily activities once again left a special impression on me.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how naturally the residents carry on with their lives above the sea.

They build their houses on wooden stilts driven into the seabed in shallow coastal waters. The houses stand above the water and are connected by wooden walkways and simple pathways that serve as the main access routes for residents.

When the tide rises, the scenery becomes even more remarkable. The wooden houses appear to float on the surface of the sea.

From a distance, the entire village seems to be floating on the water.

Yet, for the people who live here, this is nothing unusual. These are their homes, where they raise their children, rest after fishing, welcome visitors, and carry on with their everyday lives.

I always feel that this is one of the things that makes traveling around Flores so fascinating. On the same island, we can discover very different ways of life, from farming communities in the highlands to maritime communities whose livelihoods depend on the sea.

A Mosque Built Above the Sea: An Icon of Wuring

Besides its wooden stilt houses, one of the sights that catches my attention is the mosque standing above the sea.

The mosque is one of Wuring’s distinctive landmarks and reflects how the community has adapted its daily needs and religious activities to its coastal environment.

Standing among the waterfront houses, the mosque creates a unique scene. The sea is not merely a place to earn a living; it is also part of the environment in which people build their social and spiritual lives.

For visitors, the mosque offers another perspective on understanding the culture of Wuring. Life above the sea is not only about fishing. It also includes family relationships, connections between neighbors, and religious practices.

Walking Along Wooden Bridges and Observing Daily Life

Visiting the Village

After arriving in Wuring, we began walking along the wooden bridges connecting the residents’ houses.

I invited my two German guests to explore the community more closely. Rather than simply admiring the scenery from a distance, we took our time observing the activities unfolding around us.

In several parts of the village, fishing-related activities brought the surroundings to life. Fishermen and their family members were busy handling their catches, unloading fish, sorting seafood, and drying fish for processing or preservation.

Other household activities continued as usual. Children, adults, and elderly residents went about their daily routines in an environment that had been their home for generations.

Walking along the wooden bridges offered a different kind of experience. Through the gaps between the wooden planks, we could see the seawater beneath our feet, flowing between the supporting stilts of the houses. Fishing boats were another familiar sight throughout our walk. photographing people or entering private areas is a simple but meaningful way to show our respect.

For me, starting the trip by discovering the lives of a coastal community was a wonderful way to introduce them to the island. Before exploring other natural and cultural destinations, we first experienced one of the many different sides of life in Flores.

Flores is not just about beautiful landscapes, exotic beaches, volcanoes, or traditional villages. The island is also home to communities that have developed different ways of life, preserved their traditions, and continued adapting to changing times.

Wuring is one example of this remarkable diversity.

I hope this short visit left a lasting impression on my two guests and served as the beginning of many more memorable experiences throughout their journey across Flores.

As for me, this trip was another reminder that being a tour guide is about much more than showing directions or taking guests from one destination to another. It gives me the opportunity to share stories about my homeland, introduce its cultural heritage, and help travelers experience Flores from a closer and more personal perspective.

If you ever visit Maumere, I encourage you to set aside some time to explore Wuring Fishing Village. Walk along its wooden bridges, observe the fishermen at work, and take the opportunity to discover the coastal community’s way of life firsthand.

Because sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences do not happen when we stand before the grandest scenery, but when we have the opportunity to see and understand the lives of the people who make a place truly special.

We had a fantastic experience in Flores thanks to Filan and his team. Filan was flexible to accomodate all our needs and customize the trip for us. We enjoyed the Komodo national park tour with snorkeling and visiting the Komodo dragons, as well as treks through villages and rice fields up in the mountain. All perfectly organized. Thanks Filan!

We had a fantastic 4 day tour of Flores Island with Filan travel. Our guide Ino and our driver Roberto were fantastic. The SUV is very comfortable and Roberto is a great driver and a total gentleman. Ino is a very knowledgeable guide and an extremely interesting person to chat too, we really enjoyed our conversations across the four days. The days were well planned out and each of the stops were quite different from eachother. The accommodation throughout the trip was clean and very friendly and the lunch / dinner spots were great. It was a very memorable trip and we are glad we chose to go with Filan travel!

If you want to have a fantastic time road tripping across Flores with an expert guide... you're in the right place! Filan was fun, professional, knowledgeable and had the best energy day after day after day! My partner and I had four days to get from Bajo to Ende and Filan took the time and care to get us there. He showed great skill driving and even follows Australian road rules by staying on the left and not overtaking unless on dotted lines 😉 Filan had a deep appreciation for his homeland and has connections across the island, he will provide you with great accommodation and is always willing to pause for a photo, toilet break or to share his knowledge of plants, animals, and local landmarks. If you're on the fence about going on this tour with Filan please let me nudge you in the right direction.. Great bloke, great trip, we would have Filan come visit Australia any time!

Filan was recommended to us by a friend. And now after the tour it's us recommending him to everyone else. We did a 7 day Labuan Bajo to Maumere tour. He designed a specific tour for us, according our wishes for adventure and authenticity. One of the highlights: he took us to his home village to follow a walking trail (look it up on Google, it's called Golorenda Walking Trail). His driving, his knowledge and his English were all perfect. Recommend!

We spent four unforgettable days exploring Ruteng and the surrounding area with Filan of Filan Travel, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Filan is a fantastic driver—confident and calm on Flores’ rugged roads—and his clean, air-conditioned SUV with seat belts was perfect for the terrain. He speaks excellent English, communicates clearly, and has a great sense of humor, which made every day enjoyable. What really stood out was Filan’s deep love for his island. A Ruteng local, he brings cultural sites to life and tailors each day to your interests. We visited the amazing spider rice fields, the Puu traditional village, the Liang Bua cave (home of Homo floresiensis), and a mission where women learn traditional weaving and coffee roasting skills. At our request, he organized a scenic hike through small villages where we saw daily life up close—including a woman harvesting and preparing palm fronds for mat weaving using age-old techniques. Each night, Filan took us to a different local restaurant, giving us a real taste of Ruteng. Our eco-lodge was also lovely, set in lush gardens with warm, welcoming staff. Filan picked us up at our hotel at Labuan Bajo, drove us to Ruteng the first day, we did cultural things the second day, hiked the third day and drove back to Labuan Bajo the fourth day. Filan’s knowledge, flexibility, and warmth made this trip truly special. Highly recommended!

And if you want in the tour can be included a visit tò a local school for a charity project involving the children. Also Filan helped us organize the tour in Komodo National Park by boat, he was very kind and available, so we definetely recommend him.
