Filan was flexible to accomodate all our needs and customize the trip for us. We enjoyed the Komodo national park tour with snorkeling and visiting the Komodo dragons, as well as treks through villages and rice fields up in the mountain. All perfectly organized. Thanks Filan!Posted on James FoxtonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a fantastic 4 day tour of Flores Island with Filan travel. Our guide Ino and our driver Roberto were fantastic. The SUV is very comfortable and Roberto is a great driver and a total gentleman. Ino is a very knowledgeable guide and an extremely interesting person to chat too, we really enjoyed our conversations across the four days. The days were well planned out and each of the stops were quite different from eachother. The accommodation throughout the trip was clean and very friendly and the lunch / dinner spots were great. It was a very memorable trip and we are glad we chose to go with Filan travel!Posted on Milagros LedesmaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. One of the best experiences I had in Indonesia! Filan hosted me with his beautiful and kind family. He showed me around and I also made the walking tour around the villas and rice fields. He’s very kind and knowledge man. Thank you so much!Posted on Rhys Hollo-RussellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. If you want to have a fantastic time road tripping across Flores with an expert guide... you're in the right place! Filan was fun, professional, knowledgeable and had the best energy day after day after day! My partner and I had four days to get from Bajo to Ende and Filan took the time and care to get us there. He showed great skill driving and even follows Australian road rules by staying on the left and not overtaking unless on dotted lines 😉 Filan had a deep appreciation for his homeland and has connections across the island, he will provide you with great accommodation and is always willing to pause for a photo, toilet break or to share his knowledge of plants, animals, and local landmarks. If you're on the fence about going on this tour with Filan please let me nudge you in the right direction.. Great bloke, great trip, we would have Filan come visit Australia any time!Posted on Gabriel DietrichTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Filan was recommended to us by a friend. And now after the tour it's us recommending him to everyone else. We did a 7 day Labuan Bajo to Maumere tour. He designed a specific tour for us, according our wishes for adventure and authenticity. One of the highlights: he took us to his home village to follow a walking trail (look it up on Google, it's called Golorenda Walking Trail). His driving, his knowledge and his English were all perfect. Recommend!Posted on Inga AksamitTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We spent four unforgettable days exploring Ruteng and the surrounding area with Filan of Filan Travel, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Filan is a fantastic driver—confident and calm on Flores’ rugged roads—and his clean, air-conditioned SUV with seat belts was perfect for the terrain. He speaks excellent English, communicates clearly, and has a great sense of humor, which made every day enjoyable. What really stood out was Filan’s deep love for his island. A Ruteng local, he brings cultural sites to life and tailors each day to your interests. We visited the amazing spider rice fields, the Puu traditional village, the Liang Bua cave (home of Homo floresiensis), and a mission where women learn traditional weaving and coffee roasting skills. At our request, he organized a scenic hike through small villages where we saw daily life up close—including a woman harvesting and preparing palm fronds for mat weaving using age-old techniques. Each night, Filan took us to a different local restaurant, giving us a real taste of Ruteng. Our eco-lodge was also lovely, set in lush gardens with warm, welcoming staff. Filan picked us up at our hotel at Labuan Bajo, drove us to Ruteng the first day, we did cultural things the second day, hiked the third day and drove back to Labuan Bajo the fourth day. Filan’s knowledge, flexibility, and warmth made this trip truly special. Highly recommended!Posted on raffaele casanovaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Wonderful experience in the true Heart of the Island of Flores with very good prices. And if you want in the tour can be included a visit tò a local school for a charity project involving the children. Also Filan helped us organize the tour in Komodo National Park by boat, he was very kind and available, so we definetely recommend him.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best alternative destination in Indonesia besides Bali?
Flores and Komodo are absolute must-visit destinations in Indonesia outside of Bali. In fact, this region is best known globally as the prehistoric home of the Komodo dragon. Additionally, it offers a perfect blend of breathtaking marine beauty, exotic landscapes, and deeply authentic cultural heritage.
What are the most interesting things to do in Flores and Komodo?
First, you can encounter the legendary Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) in their natural habitat. Aside from that, island hopping is the ultimate highlight of the trip. For instance, you can explore world-class marine life through snorkeling and diving. At the same time, you can experience living aboard a traditional Phinisi boat. Furthermore, on mainland Flores, you can embark on cultural journeys to untouched traditional villages and hike up to majestic volcanic crater lakes.
How do I travel from Bali to Komodo Island?
To reach Komodo Island, you will first travel from Bali to Labuan Bajo on Flores Island. Specifically, this harbor town serves as the main gateway. Subsequently, upon arrival, you will board a tour boat to cross over to Komodo National Park.
Daily direct flights to Komodo International Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo are readily available from Bali, Jakarta, and Surabaya. Alternatively, Labuan Bajo can also be accessed by sea via Pelni passenger ships routing from Bali, Surabaya, and Makassar.
How many days should I allocate for a complete Flores and Komodo itinerary?
We highly recommend an ideal duration of 7 to 8 days to explore both destinations. Indeed, this timeframe ensures a comfortable and deeply immersive travel experience.
As a quick guide, a classic Komodo National Park sailing trip requires at least 3 days and 2 nights (3D2N) on a boat. Meanwhile, a Flores Overland Tour to discover the hidden gems of the mainland requires a minimum of 3 to 4 days for smooth travel.
Is it safe to travel to Flores and Komodo for tourists?
Absolutely safe. Flores and the Komodo region are incredibly welcoming to both international and domestic tourists. Moreover, the local people of Flores are famous for their genuine hospitality, and they are always ready to help travelers. Furthermore, professional park rangers will always accompany you during your trek to see the Komodo dragons to ensure your safety.
What is the best time of the year to visit Flores and Komodo?
The prime time to visit is during the dry season, from April to October. During these months, the weather is clear and sunny, and the sea is calm.
However, if you prefer to avoid the crowds (low season), traveling between November and March is an option. Nevertheless, you should be prepared for changing weather conditions and sea currents, because this period marks Indonesia’s rainy season.
Why should I book this trip through a local, Flores-based tour operator?
A homegrown, local operator possesses a profound understanding of the local terrain. Therefore, we know the shifting sea conditions and unique indigenous traditions. Since infrastructure across Flores is still developing, a local expert ensures your journey remains smooth, safe, and reliable.
In addition, the people of Flores are divided into distinct ethnic groups. Because each group preserves its own unique customs, a local operator acts as your trusted cultural bridge. Moreover, booking directly with a registered local agency guarantees maximum transparency. Consequently, it protects you from online scams and directly supports the sustainable economy of our local communities.

I remember several years ago, when I first set foot in the western region of Flores Island, Indonesia. Honestly, I thought this traditional village was similar to many other villages in Manggarai; I suspected the lifestyle, means of survival, and daily traditions were not much different from what I was used to seeing. Ironically, as a descendant of the Manggarai people, I had never witnessed a traditional village as authentic
